The 44-year-old actress, who welcomed her son with husband John Mulaney in 2021, said that postpartum depression was “harder than going through cancer.”
In a new interview with SELF magazine, Olivia revealed that her anxiety was compounded when she “couldn’t make breast milk.”
“When you stop breastfeeding immediately, your hormones drop, and postpartum can come like a storm,” the New Girls alum said.
“And I didn’t watch any of it and I didn’t tell anyone about it. Then it happened that I fell off a cliff, and I was just falling and falling and falling. It was harder than going through cancer,” Olivia added.
The X-Men: Apocalypse actress compared the overwhelming feelings to her sprained knee as her husband helped her “from one room to the next.”
“I open my eyes at 4 a.m. I’m gasping for air. I get a tightness in my chest, and it stays like that all day,” she explained.
“It felt like the end of the world. It felt like when you watch a horror movie — the worst, scariest horror movie you can think of — that’s how my body felt,” Olivia added.
