Karan Johar, commonly called by his nickname KJo is the leading director, producer, and Television personality in the Bollywood film Industry. He is counted amongst the biggest producers in Bollywood and produces his movies under the production house “Dharma Productions”.

Early Life of Karan Johar

Karan Johar is a Mumbaikar and was born on May 25, 1972 in the family of Yash Johar and Hiroo Johar. His father, Yash Johar, was also a film producer and founded the successful production house ” Dharma Productions” in 1979. Karan completed his initial studies at Greenlawn’s High School in Mumbai. Later, he attended the H.R. College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai.

Career of Karan Johar

Karan Johar entered the entertainment industry as an actor in the role of Shrikant on Doorsarshan’s Indradhanush in 1989. The commercial Bollywood movies had a major impact on Karan Johar since childhood.

Finally, Karan got an opportunity to work as an assistant director on Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in 1995 under the guidance of Aditya Chopra. In 1998, Karan finally made his directorial debut with the release of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The movie turned out to be the biggest hit of the year and is still considered one of the most iconic Bollywood movies.

The next movie for Karan as a director was Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… which was released in 2001 and broke all the year’s box office records. Two consecutive blockbusters placed Karan amongst the most popular directors of Bollywood.

Karan Johar also has a reputation for giving flight to the careers of newcomers and reviving the careers of Veteran artists. Such a reputation explains the success of Shahrukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, Kareena Kapoor, etc.

Another critical success for Karan Johar’s direction career came in 2006 with his third directorial movie Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. The movie received great feedback from audiences in India and overseas. Karan also co-wrote the screenplay for the movie and was applauded globally for his control over the movie’s script.

Besides direction, Karan Johar is also an accomplished producer who has produced many successful movies, like 2 States, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, I Hate Luv Storys, Agneepath, and many others.

Karan Johar is also a famous Television personality. He has been a judge of several reality shows like India’s Got Talent, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, etc. Karan also hosted his talk show Koffee with Karan. The show aired for seven seasons until 2019.

The sexual orientation of Karan has been a talking point for media and people for many years. He told in an interview that people know his sexual orientation, and he does not feel that there is any need to announce it publicly. Karan Johar became the father of a boy and a girl in 2017 through surrogacy. His kids are named Yash and Roohi.

Criticism of Karan Johar

The biggest criticism of Karan Johar came after the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput. A cloth found Sushant dead hanging in his apartment. The investigations into his death raised many questions about the inner politics of Bollywood and nepotism.

Karan was criticized for mostly casting artists whose parents were an established part of Bollywood in the past. Moreover, people blamed Karan for neglecting the talented artists over the children of the other Bollywood actors. But Karan has discarded such allegations in several interviews. He has said that many of the directors in his movies are from a non-Bollywood background.

Awards Won by Karan Johar

Karan is amongst the most decorated artists from Bollywood. He won the prestigious IIFA word 6 times in his 15 nominations. He is the recipient of the National Film Award for his blockbuster movie “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” in 2001. Also, the Indian Government honored his contributions to the Hindi film industry and awarded him the Padma Shri award in 2020.
